I'm not here to give a whole spiel about saving the stars since I don't know a whole lot myself.
But did you know that there's this thing called light pollution? Even if you have heard of it, do you know what it actually is and what it does to your environment?
Light pollution is when artificial lights disrupt the environment by interfering with the viewing of the night sky because of the creation of sky glow.
I personally never noticed this until I researched what this was, but when you look up at the night sky it appears that the sky is actually glowing. It's never completely dark.
Depending on where you are, it is obviously more or less severe. However the problem is still real.
Because of sky glow, it can affect animal behavior by confusing them and misguiding them. Not only that, but humans can be affected as well.
There is actually a higher risk of getting cancer and bad sleep conditions if one is exposed to too much artificial lights at night.
So who's the problem?
It's not a mystery: it's people.
With the growth of more cities comes more lights that pollution the night sky.
However, unlike many other kinds of pollution, light pollution can be fixed easily with little cost at all.
There's no need to join an organization, like the International Dark- Sky Association, but you can help.
Just be mindful of what types of lights you use. The best kind to use are low sodium bulbs that are fully shielded.
If you can buy new bulbs, you can still turn out the lights before it gets dark; that way, the lights don't affect the animals.
I'm still very ignorant when it comes to light pollution.
I'm still shocked at the fact that light could actually pollution. Sky glow, with out a doubt, blocks out the stars the same was the sunshine does.
And when I looked up at the same night sky I did every day ever since I was a child,
I thought it looked gross.
On a side note, I thought I did a really nice job on the hand, but then I looked at it again and I was like ;A;;;;;
I already colored it in and now I don't feel like fixing it orz ;w;;
